Introduction:
For the first seven years of my oboe playing, I didn't know what oboe reed making was all about. The actual steps seemed a bit confusing, so I was hesitant to get serious. I would rather pay three times the money and get a finished reed from the store, which wasn't guaranteed to work. Then, in college, I had to play strictly on my own reeds, which forced me to learn how, and I realized I really could do it!

Basic Materials in an oboe reed kit include:
1. Cane (see other pages for visuals of cane)
2. Tube (27mm length is standard)
3. Knife* (see figure 1 below for specifics)
4. Sharpening system (not shown in fig.1 below)
5. Mandrel (optional, but makes it easier)
6. 3-ply nylon thread
7. ruler that shows millimeters
8. cutting block or solid cutting surface (hard wood is best)
9. Oboe reed plaque (small metal disk for insertion between reed blades)
10. Oboe (the instrument) for final reed testing (not shown).
11. Optional: razor blade for cutting tip
